TanRabbit
An aristocrat is always radiant
About
The most noticeable difference of a Tan rabbit is the vibrant contrast of colour in their coat. The rich intensity of the tan underbelly is striking against the smooth glossiness of the black, chocolate, blue or lilac coat. This elegant coat has given them the title of the
"Aristocrat of the Fancy". The Tan is a truly unique breed, they brim with intelligence, confidence, and energy. Tans thrive on their careers affection, and develop a special bond with that person. This means that they are very good at playing with games, and learning to do tricks. The Tan rabbits at Greenpatch love to have fun practacing and performing Rabbit Show Jumping. Due to their active nature they do need a larger cage than similar sized breeds. They make an excellent pet for children who want sit and play with their rabbit in the rabbit run.
Sadly the Tan rabbit was all but extinct in Australia only a few years ago, and is still a rare breed today. Fortunately, thanks to the passion of breeders & exhibitors this elegant breed has is saved from existing only in the pages of history. It is with a sense of pride that we care for them at Greenpatch.
History
Developed in England during the 1880s, they where produced from the offspring of a colony of wild rabbits mixed with Dutch-type rabbits. These original Tans had disappointingly bad tempers. Later they where then crossed with Belgian Hares, this made the breed a little larger but much more friendlier. These original Tan rabbits were only black, as genetically this was the only colour available. At the turn of the 20th century a blue version appeared. Later still after 1920 it is suspected a Havana was crossed into the lines to produce a chocolate variation. The crossing of the chocolate and blue colours led to the creation of the lilac tan.
Type
Tans are to be of a stocky solid build, with well rounded & straight sturdy legs, short neck and weigh about 2kg. They have a short glossy fly back coat, with a silky touch. The colour markings are clearly defined with a sharp edge contrasting between the self colour and the tan underbelly. They come in four colour variations: Black, Blue, Chocolate and Lilac.
